61st post: Thank You For Reading

I began blogging on 8/26/13. I blogged at the gentle nudging of an #eduhero of mine. I wasn't sure what I had to say mattered to anyone. But, I had a feeling blogging would help me in my role as Principal. Sixty posts later and we have made it to the 61st post.

That's amazing to me. It's amazing to think that someone who sincerely considers herself shy and an introvert at most times, has been able to put together so many entries.

Here's a look back at some of the posts:

Faculty Meeting Smackdowns: This post gathered over 1200 views. 1200 views?! Who could even imagine 1200 people being interested in the idea?

One of my more popular posts over 400 was Growth Mindset. Meeting the principal who inspired the post has been a highlight of my career so far. She taught me so much in our short exchange.

Most of my posts yield just about 200-300 views. That is likely peanuts to what leaders in the big leagues see. I know that and am pretty comfortable being the small fish hanging out with the big fish. When I first started blogging, my posts were read by just under 100 people sometimes. Sometimes, even fewer.

But the reading of the posts by others isn't the main reason I blog. I blog as a source of reflection. Sometimes I blog as a branding tool. Blogging helps me refine my voice.

Blogs have become my go to reading each day. My PLN is an abundant source of blog posts!  I find inspiration in so many of them. Some of them get me agitated. That's okay too. A little emotion never hurt anyone. In fact, it usually adds more color to the picture.

I blog on nights that I worry I won't have what it takes to be the leader I need to be the next day and I blog on nights that I am on cloud nine about leadership. In good time and in bad, these reflections have helped me bring into a focus a clearer picture.

The intent of tonight's post is simpler. This post is about gratitude. Thank you for reading. Thank you for taking the time to read, comment, retweet, share and even disagree. Your interaction with these posts has shaped my actions as a leader...all for the better.

    Congratulations on your 61st post. I created a blog over the summer so I am still a beginner. Wow.. 1200 views on 1 post? So impressive! The most I have had is about 200. I just started my blog over the summer and look forward to the journey!

Something about March

Our work in school leadership can often come in waves. Some days you are happily swimming to shore while other days you might feel as though it is taking all of your energy to stay above the water.  The latter is often what March feels like.  There is something about March that has always felt like a difficult month for me, at least personally, as an educator. Growth Mindset

This will be a quick post likely full of errors and incomplete sentences. But, I feel a pressing need to get these thoughts to paper while: a) I have time  and b) I can still remember the pieces I want to connect I was given a great opportunity to work with Dr. Shawn Hunziker today. We've conducted some online book studies around Mindset by Carol Dweck. This past winter, we were invited to give a keynote to CSE Chairpersons ( BIG TIME for us) and that led to today's session with CNYSEA's Summer Institute .  On my way to the session, I was rehearsing notes (as I always do, see previous post ). At a stop sign near the venue where the conference was held, I pulled up in back of a car and noticed the neatest license plate: NEVRQT* I think that's how it was spelled. My one word: Courage

I am part of an amazing voxer group of MS Principals and Jay Posick became a recent member of that group. Talk about a man with the right mindset. Recently, he posted a link about a one word challenge and it got me thinking. I've been struggling with the idea of a "new year" and the (self-imposed) push to set some resolutions. I don't like the idea of setting resolutions. They feel too artificial for me. Maybe that's because I've failed at them before. But, what I can commit and buy into is this idea of one word . I think my word is COURAGE.  It's funny when I typed out that sentence, I couldn't get around the phrase "I think". The way I crafted that sentence speaks to why I have chosen the word courage to help guide me in this new year. I need courage to continue to take risks and nurture creative ideas. I need courage to finally do some things I have been postponing (some for just 30 years or so) and set to accomplishing them or...
