Class of 2022 - Congratulations


    Graduation is about celebrating the end of something incredible and the beginning of the even more incredible next chapter of your lives. Graduation is about the Seniors and the work it took them to get here. Different paths were taken to get here today and each path was illuminated in a different way. Some of these seniors lit their torches at MJT and continued at GES. Others came from towns near and far to have the last of their journey culminate here. Some paths led to CTE certifications in heavy equipment, culinary arts, and criminal justice. Other paths will lead to institutions of higher learning. Whatever the path and destination, there were no doubt a number of twists and turns along the way. The light that has guided the way came from many of you here today and it is our hope that as soon-to-be graduates of Granville Central School you will shine bright and share your light with each other and those you encounter on your path that may need a little light of their own. 


I hope you will always remember the feelings and memories of your high school experience. Maybe it was playing under the lights, maybe it was an induction into the National Honor Society, maybe it was pushing through the anxiety you secretly struggle with each day, maybe it was making amends for something you did wrong that landed you in the Assistant Principal’s office, or maybe it was getting the chance to play basketball for the first time as a Unified Sports athlete. Maybe it was remembering the day Mrs. Becker let you hang in her classroom all day as you struggled with the weight of the world on your shoulders.  Maybe it was the text from a teacher reminding you to keep your chin up and offering you help if you’d accept it. Maybe it was coming in early or staying late with Mr. Hardin to make sure you had your proofs right or gaming on Thursdays with Mr. Gilman. Maybe it was taking a walk around the school to talk with Mr. Slater. 


I hope you will always remember that the entire JSHS Faculty and Staff care about you and celebrate the achievements of today. I’ll tell you a secret about your teachers, TAs, and even your Principal. We don’t just “teach” and go home. Most of us see this as a career of service and try very hard to do all we can to help every student. If you need examples of that look no further than Mr. Marsfelder, Mrs. Kilby and Mr. Richard. They could have permanently retired at any time but didn’t. They keep coming back and it’s because of the amazing students here at Granville. 


It’s because of you. 


If I can leave you with one piece of advice, it would be this: 


Know your worth. 


Author Tene Edwards said, “You must find the courage to leave the table if respect is no longer being served.” You, every single one of you, are worthy and loved beyond measure. Do not underestimate that, diminish that, or hide it. You deserve respect, and you deserve to feel valued. You be you. The sooner you learn that, the better your road in life will be. 


Congratulations to every single member of the Class of 2022.

Something about March

Our work in school leadership can often come in waves. Some days you are happily swimming to shore while other days you might feel as though it is taking all of your energy to stay above the water.  The latter is often what March feels like.  There is something about March that has always felt like a difficult month for me, at least personally, as an educator. Growth Mindset

This will be a quick post likely full of errors and incomplete sentences. But, I feel a pressing need to get these thoughts to paper while: a) I have time  and b) I can still remember the pieces I want to connect I was given a great opportunity to work with Dr. Shawn Hunziker today. We've conducted some online book studies around Mindset by Carol Dweck. This past winter, we were invited to give a keynote to CSE Chairpersons ( BIG TIME for us) and that led to today's session with CNYSEA's Summer Institute .  On my way to the session, I was rehearsing notes (as I always do, see previous post ). At a stop sign near the venue where the conference was held, I pulled up in back of a car and noticed the neatest license plate: NEVRQT* I think that's how it was spelled. My one word: Courage

I am part of an amazing voxer group of MS Principals and Jay Posick became a recent member of that group. Talk about a man with the right mindset. Recently, he posted a link about a one word challenge and it got me thinking. I've been struggling with the idea of a "new year" and the (self-imposed) push to set some resolutions. I don't like the idea of setting resolutions. They feel too artificial for me. Maybe that's because I've failed at them before. But, what I can commit and buy into is this idea of one word . I think my word is COURAGE.  It's funny when I typed out that sentence, I couldn't get around the phrase "I think". The way I crafted that sentence speaks to why I have chosen the word courage to help guide me in this new year. I need courage to continue to take risks and nurture creative ideas. I need courage to finally do some things I have been postponing (some for just 30 years or so) and set to accomplishing them or...
