For My Team

Today marked the last day of school for our students. Most of them looked incredibly happy to be officially entering the summer season. We held moving up day and said our goodbyes at dismissal. After the students departed, you were busy in rooms cleaning up, packing up, and finishing up end of the year grades. There's always so much to do these last few days.

Yet, some of our most important work will be after tomorrow. After our last day together as a full faculty, you will depart for summer. Summer has different options for everyone but always includes a chance to reflect and recharge.

As I begin to reflect on this year, I am still grateful for the school community of which I am a part of. My team puts up with a lot from me during the year. I make mistakes and somehow you find a way to support me through them. You've never held me to the "you must be perfect" standard. You've let me be me, faults, flaws, strengths and all. 

As I look forward to the summer and a chance to recharge, I am aware of areas both building wide and personally that I must prioritize and continue to improve upon. We are all works in progress and I have never been an exception to that. I always feel I could be doing more. Yet, I know that our most important work is that which is done collectively. Together, we are always better.

When the end of tomorrow arrives, I am hopeful that you will exit our doors knowing you gave your very best this year. Take the time to reflect and recharge.  Before we know it, we'll be back together to meet our newest challenges and celebrate our newest successes ...still yet to be known.

    Lisa, I loved your blog. (as I always do) Thanks for your thoughtfulness and for always inspiring us to do and be our best. As far as your feeling that you could be doing more? I can't imagine what more you could be doing - you do it all for your staff and your students. I have been blessed to work with you and for you. I will never forget my time with you at CMS.

      Terry, I hope you never forget how much you have meant to me and how much you have impacted my practice. To say I will miss you doesn't even begin to cover it.

Something about March

Our work in school leadership can often come in waves. Some days you are happily swimming to shore while other days you might feel as though it is taking all of your energy to stay above the water.  The latter is often what March feels like.  There is something about March that has always felt like a difficult month for me, at least personally, as an educator. Growth Mindset

This will be a quick post likely full of errors and incomplete sentences. But, I feel a pressing need to get these thoughts to paper while: a) I have time  and b) I can still remember the pieces I want to connect I was given a great opportunity to work with Dr. Shawn Hunziker today. We've conducted some online book studies around Mindset by Carol Dweck. This past winter, we were invited to give a keynote to CSE Chairpersons ( BIG TIME for us) and that led to today's session with CNYSEA's Summer Institute .  On my way to the session, I was rehearsing notes (as I always do, see previous post ). At a stop sign near the venue where the conference was held, I pulled up in back of a car and noticed the neatest license plate: NEVRQT* I think that's how it was spelled. My one word: Courage

I am part of an amazing voxer group of MS Principals and Jay Posick became a recent member of that group. Talk about a man with the right mindset. Recently, he posted a link about a one word challenge and it got me thinking. I've been struggling with the idea of a "new year" and the (self-imposed) push to set some resolutions. I don't like the idea of setting resolutions. They feel too artificial for me. Maybe that's because I've failed at them before. But, what I can commit and buy into is this idea of one word . I think my word is COURAGE.  It's funny when I typed out that sentence, I couldn't get around the phrase "I think". The way I crafted that sentence speaks to why I have chosen the word courage to help guide me in this new year. I need courage to continue to take risks and nurture creative ideas. I need courage to finally do some things I have been postponing (some for just 30 years or so) and set to accomplishing them or...
